Foreign Minister Wu begins Baltic tour
2023/11/08
Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu is visiting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania Nov. 6-12 to bolster exchanges and deepen Taiwan’s friendships with the Baltic states, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his trip, Wu is scheduled to attend a forum in Lithuania to discuss the future of democracy and ways to combat totalitarianism. The minister will also deliver speeches at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs in Riga and the International Centre for Defense and Security in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, to convey Taiwan’s commitment to safeguarding freedom and democracy.
In addition to speaking at think tanks, Wu will meet with academics and political figures to exchange views on issues pertinent to politics, economics and society.
According to the MOFA, Wu’s trip follows last month’s Taiwan visit by Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen, speaker of the Lithuanian parliament, as well as the August visit from Marko Mihkelson, Zygimantas Pavilionis and Rihards Kols, heads of the foreign affairs committees of the Estonian, Lithuanian and Latvian parliaments, respectively. The ministry said such visits demonstrate the increasingly common vibrant exchanges between Taiwan and the Baltic states.
Wu’s current visit will open a new chapter for multilateral relationships, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue building a solid foundation for Taiwan’s mutually beneficial cooperation with the three democratic countries.
