President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation led by Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte at the Presidential Office Oct. 31 in Taipei City, pledging to deepen bilateral partnership with the U.S. state for the benefit of both sides.
According to the president, Taiwan and Montana have a long-standing relationship in agriculture and tourism, with Taiwan being the U.S. state’s seventh largest trading partner. She expressed hope that the two sides will enjoy even broader and more far-reaching exchanges.
In addition to hosting a major optoelectronic cluster in the U.S., Tsai noted that Montana is also actively developing biotechnology, cloud computing and aerospace industries under the governor’s leadership. She further thanked the governor for re-opening the state's Asia trade office in Taipei after taking office in 2021.
The president expressed appreciation to the state legislature for passing resolutions supporting Taiwan’s international participation. It is hoped that the two sides will continue to expand exchanges and deepen their partnership, Tsai said.
In response, Gianforte said while agriculture remains the bedrock of the state’s trade relationship with Taiwan, cooperation is progressing apace in other sectors like education, bioscience and photonics. He cited two programs sponsored by Taiwan’s Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs to provide Mandarin language courses and short-term exchanges in international business and semiconductor personnel.
The governor added that he was excited about potential extension to the partnership, as during his visit, the state is expected to sign a cooperative pact to further deepen collaboration with Taiwan’s key sectors.
