2023/11/02
Taiwan and Guatemala concluded a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation in customs matters Oct. 31 via video conference, marking another milestone in the two-way relationship, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The pact was signed by Peng Ying-wei, director-general of the ministry’s Customs Administration, and his Guatemalan counterpart, Marco Livio Diaz Reyes, at their respective locations in Taipei and Guatemala Cities. ROC (Taiwan) Amb. to Guatemala Miguel Li-jey Tsao, Guatemala Amb. Oscar Adolfo Padilla Lam and other senior officials from both sides were also present to witness the event.
Guatemala is an important partner in Central America, with the two allies concluding a free trade agreement in 2005 and the Authorized Economic Operator mutual recognition arrangement in 2021, the ministry said. The latest MOU follows the letter of intent aiming to promote customs modernization and capacity building inked during the visit of a delegation to Taiwan led by Diaz in August, the MOF added.
Under the new agreement, both sides may establish institutional cooperation and provide technical assistance for creating communication channels to facilitate safe and fast exchange of information, knowledge and experience, thus enhancing border controls and promoting two-way trade, the MOF said.
According to MOF statistics, Taiwan has concluded more than 20 pacts on customs cooperation, information exchange and mutual assistance with key trading partners such as India, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, the U.S., and the EU and its member states.
