President Tsai Ing-wen conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon on Hiroyasu Izumi, the outgoing chief representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Oct. 30 in recognition of his contributions to advancing bilateral relations.
During a ceremony at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, Tsai said Izumi’s four-year term saw a deepening of the relationship between Taiwan and Japan as they supported each other through the COVID-19 pandemic. They also concluded 10 cooperative agreements in areas spanning youth cultivation, environmental protection, judicial affairs and transportation, diversifying the two-way exchanges and bringing the countries closer, she added.
In the same period, the two special partners also jointly organized a raft of events under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework on disaster prevention, energy security and public health, the president said. Calling the outgoing chief representative a true friend of Taiwan, Tsai said his efforts are sincerely appreciated by the country’s government and people.
Tsai added that the special bond between Taiwan and Japan shows that partners in freedom and democracy can cooperate to address global challenges while forming a virtuous cycle to contribute to regional development and prosperity.
In response, Izumi said he is greatly honored to receive the state medal directly from the president. Citing her 2023 National Day address, Izumi said Taiwan has become a Taiwan of the world thanks to Tsai’s leadership, and welcomed her to visit Japan in the future.
