2023/10/30
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its sincere congratulations to the newly elected speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson and anticipated continued close cooperation with the House to deepen Taiwan-U.S. ties Oct. 26 in Taipei City.
Johnson, vice chair of the House Republican Conference as well as a member of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, was elected as the speaker Oct. 25, according to the MOFA.
Taiwan and the U.S. share the same core values of democracy, freedom, human rights and the respect for the rule of law, the ministry said, adding that in recent years, the two sides have achieved great things in fields spanning the economy, politics, security and trade.
The U.S. Congress’ bipartisan backing for Taiwan has always served as the most solid foundation for the countries’ partnership, the ministry said. Since the 118th Congress convened in January 2023, over 50 Taiwan-related bills and resolutions have been raised, which clearly demonstrates firm support of Taiwan, the MOFA added.
The ministry looks forward to fruitful collaboration with the new House speaker and cross-party Congress members in the interest of advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
