President Tsai receives Reagan foundation delegation

President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 24 that Taiwan is committed to deepening bilateral relations with the U.S. to explore further opportunities for cooperation and joint contribution to the international community.
Tsai made the remarks while meeting with a delegation from the California-based Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute led by its president, David Trulio, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
The late U.S. President Reagan was a strong supporter and friend of Taiwan, Tsai said. The delegation members continue his legacy and ideals in advocating for individual freedom, economic opportunity and global democracy, she added.
Reagan’s Six Assurances remain a key to the development of Taiwan-U.S. relations and a cornerstone for maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, Tsai said, adding that his “peace through strength” approach has also profoundly influenced Taiwan.
According to the president, Taiwan continues to upgrade its defense capabilities and expand cooperation with democracies facing authoritarian expansion. The government is dedicated to promoting self-sufficiency in national defense with domestically made aircraft and naval vessels, she said, expressing appreciation for the way the U.S. has normalized military sales to the country and strengthened the two-way security partnership.
In response, Trulio said the trip aims to continue the deep tradition of Reagan’s commitment to the people of Taiwan, quoting his remarks that all nations are bound together with the common heritage of a love of freedom and that the duty to defend democracy is shared by all. Trulio added that Taiwan and the U.S. will work together to solidify their commitment to freedom, security and economic opportunity.
