Foreign Minister welcomes even deeper links with Czechia

2023/10/26

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu attended a reception Oct. 23 celebrating the Czech Republic’s 105th National Day and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague and Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, underscoring the deep bond between the two sides.

Speaking at the ceremony in Taipei City, Wu said that despite the geographic distance, Taiwan and Czechia enjoy close exchanges spanning a broad range of areas thanks to their shared regard for democracy, freedom and human rights.

According to the minister, the two countries frequently host high-level officials from the other side, including Czech Republic Senate President Milos Vystrcil’s 2020 visit and the 160-member delegation to Taiwan led by Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova in March. Wu himself visited Prague in June, attending the European Values Summit during his trip.

The Czech Republic has staunchly supported Taiwan in recent years, Wu said, citing the central European country’s donation of COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan during the pandemic and President Petr Pavel’s voicing concern over cross-strait tensions during the General Debate at this year’s U.N. General Assembly.

On behalf of the government and people, the minister expressed sincere gratitude to Czechia for its concrete actions backing Taiwan. Such behavior sets a good example for other like-minded European countries, he added.

In response, CECO Head David Steinke said he has traveled across Taiwan in the past year to conduct cultural exchanges, expand bilateral business opportunities and negotiate high-tech cooperation, all of which signify the two sides’ close ties. He added that he was honored to witness the launch of direct flights between the two sides in July and is delighted that they have been fully booked through the end of the year.
