Tsai reiterates goal of closer regional cooperation and dialogues

2023/10/25

President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 23 that Taiwan is committed to maintaining regional peace and stability, and expressed hopes for closer collaboration and communication in the region to uphold the development of global democracy.

The president made the remarks while meeting with a group from the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, led by Susan M. Elliott, its president and CEO. Tsai said she believed that the delegation’s visit will give its members a more comprehensive understanding of Taiwan and the overall challenges faced by the region.

Tsai expressed appreciation for NCAFP’s issuing of regular reports on the Taiwan-U.S. relationship and cross-strait conditions. She also thanked the committee for facilitating multilateral talks and deepening ties between the two countries, which has enabled positive security developments in the Asia-Pacific.

Taiwan’s expanding partnership with the U.S. comes as it builds closer relationships with other democracies, Tsai said, citing a recent Global Cooperation and Training Framework maritime disaster management workshop organized by Taiwan, the U.S., Japan, Australia and St. Lucia as an example. Taiwan is willing and able to respond to emerging problems and challenges together with the international community, the president concluded.

In response, Elliott said that the NCAFP has hosted various informal trilateral discussions and talks that bring together experts and academics from Taipei, Beijing and the U.S. She expressed her confidence that dialogues are the best way to maintain regional peace, stability and prosperity.
