A total of 366 publications from Taiwan are going on display at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair Oct. 18-22 in Germany, showcasing the depth and breadth of the country’s literary landscape to the international community.

The Taiwan Pavilion’s theme is “Stories Ahead: Taiwan Lit Now,” and includes works from 73 publishers. Co-organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and Taipei Book Fair Foundation, the displays are divided into five sections.

The pavilion’s centerpiece focuses on works that contemplate the factors, including the self, gender, society and ethnicity, that help people form and understand identity. The remaining sections cover award-winning titles, publishers’ recommendations, new publications this year and works that have won a grant from the Ministry of Culture that was established to encourage the overseas publication of translated works.

TAICCA CEO Lu Jiun-wei anticipates that Taiwan’s abundant and diverse titles will meet with great success at the fair. The agency is committed to further promoting Taiwan’s authors and their stories in the international arena while expanding the copyrights market to create more global publishing opportunities, he added.

In addition, the TAICCA hosted a reception Oct. 17 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its “Books From Taiwan” initiative, which selects local publications with high marketability to promote at international exhibitions. Under the initiative, the international copyrights of 348 books have been sold to 37 countries and translated into 29 languages, the TAICCA said.

Other highlight activities include lectures on topics like Indigenous culture and women’s writing, exchange events with publishers from Portugal and the Netherlands and over 100 meetings on copyright trading.

First held in 1949, the Frankfurt Book Fair has attracted 137 million visitors to date. This year marks the 75th anniversary and Slovenia is the guest of honor.
