Taiwan, Czechia literature museums sign MOU to expand exchanges

2023/10/19

A memorandum of understanding was concluded between the National Museum of Taiwan Literature and the Museum of Czech Literature Oct. 16 at Taiwan Literature Base in Taipei City, reflecting the two sides’ commitment to boosting bilateral cultural exchanges.

The agreement was signed by NMTL Director Nikky Lin and her Czech counterpart Zdenek Freisleben. Kuei Yeh-chin, director-general of the Ministry of Culture’s Department of Cultural Exchange, and David Steinke, head of the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, both witnessed the signing.

According to the MOC, the pact covers exhibitions, translations of published works and author visits, among other matters.

During the ceremony, Lin said the NTML’s Taiwan literature exhibition held in the Czech cities of Brno, Olomouc and Pardubice last year proved popular with local audiences. The museum is preparing to host a Czech literature exhibition in 2024 at its headquarters in the southern city of Tainan and another Czech-themed event when its forthcoming Taipei branch opens, she added.

In response, Freisleben said Taiwan and the Czech Republic both have distinctive heritages and share the experience of fighting for freedom and democracy, adding that the two facilities discussed a deeper partnership at the International Council of Museums’ general conference in Prague last year, and he looks forward to further collaboration going forward.

Following their remarks, Kuei said Taiwan launched a cultural division in the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague, earlier this year to expand related exchanges with countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Steinke added that the two sides have enjoyed a close relationship for over 30 years, and the direct flights between Taipei and Prague that commenced in July will promote even stronger ties.
