President Tsai Ing-wen received a parliamentary delegation from Japan at the Presidential Office Oct. 11 in Taipei City, reaffirming commitment to expanding the special partnership to make greater contributions to the Indo-Pacific.
Comprising members of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council and led by Koichi Hagiuda, council secretary-general and chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Policy Research Council, the group is in Taiwan for the Double Ten National Day celebrations at the invitation of the government, according to the PO.
Tsai thanked the delegates for visiting Taiwan on this special occasion to show their long-term support. Their call on the Legislative Yuan proved to be a great opportunity for both sides to exchange views on issues of mutual concern and paves way for more reciprocal visits, she said.
The president also expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for donating vaccines during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and for urging the global community to pay close attention to cross-strait peace and stability. She added that the warm friendship is sincerely appreciated by the government and people.
In the face of authoritarian expansion and challenges such as post-pandemic recovery and net-zero carbon emissions, Tsai said Taiwan looks forward to continued cooperation with Japan to advance regional peace and prosperity.
In response, Hagiuda said that it is a privilege for the delegates to take part in the celebrations, adding that they are equally honored by the fact that the marching band of Tokyo University of Agriculture’s Second High School performed during the event, one of the most high-profile in Taiwan’s calendar.
The MP said while delivering a speech on Japan-Taiwan relations at I-Shou University in Kaohsiung City, he was surprised by the strong interest in Japan from Taiwan’s college students. It is hoped that youth exchanges between the two sides will continue to expand in the future.
Taiwan is a very important friend of Japan, Hagiuda said, adding that his party’s bilateral cooperation and exchanges will bring the partnership to a new height.
