President Tsai Ing-wen received St. Kitts and Nevis Governor-General Marcella Althea Liburd, Australian MP Scott Morrison and a parliamentary delegation from Japan Oct. 10 in Taipei City, pledging to continue expanding ties with the like-minded partners.
According to the Presidential Office, the distinguished guests are in Taiwan to attend the Double Ten National Day celebrations at the invitation of the government.
During her meeting with Liburd, Tsai said bilateral cooperation between Taiwan and the Caribbean ally is going from strength to strength in key areas such as agriculture, education and medical care. The robust relationship is underscored by her 2019 visit to the island state and another by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu as her special envoy to celebrate the country’s 40th anniversary of independence last month, she added.
The president thanked St. Kitts and Nevis for its long-term support for Taiwan’s global participation and concern for cross-strait affairs, adding that she looks forward to more two-way cooperation for the benefit of the people on both sides going forward.
While receiving Scott Morrison earlier the same day, Tsai said Taiwan hopes to enhance security cooperation with Australia and other democracies to ensure freedom and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
She thanked the former prime minister for the joint statement expressing strong support for Taiwan that was released after the 2020 Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations. Ever since, the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability has become a key point in the majority of joint statements issued after summits between Australia and important international political figures, Tsai said.
The president and Vice President Lai Ching-te also hosted a luncheon the same day for a delegation led by Keiji Furuya, chair of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council.
Tsai said that since its establishment 50 years ago, the council has been a driving force in cementing Taiwan-Japan partnership and a strong supporter of Taiwan’s global participation. During the pandemic, the political body also helped facilitate reciprocal donations of key medical supplies such as vaccines and surgical masks, she added.
It is hoped that the council will support Taiwan’s bid to take part in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, so the two special partners can make even greater contributions to regional prosperity, the president said.
