National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Tsung-tsong met with Franck Paris, the new director of the French Office in Taipei, Oct. 4 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing bilateral scientific research cooperation.
At the meeting, Wu said the shared values of democracy and freedom of speech are the driving force behind the two sides’ deepening partnership. The world’s democracies must unite to ensure generative artificial intelligence is on the right track to benefit democratic mechanisms, he added.
The minister concluded by expressing his hope of strengthening scientific research collaboration with France and addressing global challenges together.
In response, Paris, who previously served as an adviser in France’s presidential office, said the Western European country has always admired Taiwan’s democratic resilience and technological might. He praised the NSTC's newly founded Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology and eagerly anticipated jointly investigating AI’s societal impact.
Paris added that he was looking forward to heightened cooperation spanning AI, semiconductors, quantum technology and talent cultivation.
According to the NSTC, both sides have agreed to provide additional research resources and subsidize a growing number of cooperative research projects to promote bilateral academic exchanges. This is expected to stimulate scientific advancement and help tackle global issues such as climate change and aging populations, the council said.
