MOFA releases video of Taiwan youth ambassadors’ St. Lucia visit

A video documenting the Sept. 2-11 trip by Taiwan youth ambassadors to St. Lucia was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oct. 3 as part of government enhancement of bilateral exchanges and people-to-people ties.
According to Constance H. Wang, director general of the MOFA’s Department of NGO International Affairs, this year’s trip was themed “Youth Innovation, Taiwan and St. Lucia Take Action.” The youth ambassadors were received by Acting Governor-General Errol Charles and called on Senate President Alvina Reynolds and Claudius Francis, speaker of the House of Assembly, during their stay.
One highlight was a Sept. 7 youth forum jointly staged by Embassy of the ROC (Taiwan) in St. Lucia and the Caribbean ally’s Youth Economy Agency, Wang said. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre opened the event, in which Taiwan youth ambassadors shared successful examples of business creativity and local revitalization with St. Lucia young entrepreneurs and students.
Equally impressive were two baking workshops and a tasting activity offered by four WorldSkills Competition Taiwan participants with culinary expertise, Wang said. It was the first time that such competitors have accompanied youth ambassadors in visiting an ally and they gave a cooking demonstration combining the two countries’ ingredients in both dishes and desserts, she added.
Wang said the youth ambassadors hosted Taiwan cultural camps at four elementary and junior high schools to teach students traditional skills from calligraphy to diabolo play. They also participated in the Taiwan-St. Lucia Night, singing songs and performing folk dance and martial arts, she added.
Launched in 2009, the International Youth Ambassadors Exchange Program has selected around 1,800 outstanding students to serve as youth ambassadors to Taiwan’s allies and like-minded partners. The initiative is an effective use of soft power that showcases Taiwan’s creativity to the world and engages the country’s youth in international affairs.
