Peng Tzu-hui and Wang Ping-wen received San Sebastian International Film Festival’s Silver Shell for best director for their film “A Journey in Spring” Sept. 30, marking Taiwan’s first prize at the Spanish event, according to the Ministry of Culture.
Upon receiving the good news, Culture Minister Shih Che sent a congratulatory message to the directing duo, applauding the hard work that led to the movie becoming the first entry from Taiwan to take an award in SSIFF’s main competition category.
The film stood out among 16 international competitors, Shih said, which demonstrates the maturity and ingenuity of Taiwan’s young industry talent. The MOC said that “A Journey in Spring” was originally programmed in the new directors category, but the film entered the main competition on the strength of its performance with the jury.
Peng, who earned a master’s degree in artistic production from the Technical University of Valencia, said that she was thankful to both Taiwan and Spain for fostering her creativity. Wang dedicated the award to her family and country.
The San Sebastian International Film Festival takes place annually in Donostia-San Sebastian in September. It began in 1953 and is certified by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations as one of 14 top-level competitive festivals, the MOC added.
