Foreign Minister Wu receives Guatemala counterpart, vows to deepen two-way ties

2023/10/04

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with his Guatemala counterpart Mario Bucaro Oct. 2 in Taipei City, with both sides expressing their commitment to fostering a closer bilateral relationship across the board.

Wu said Taiwan and Guatemala have close partnerships spanning the public and private sectors, citing the jointly built National Hospital of Chimaltenango, which President Tsai Ing-wen visited during her state trip to Guatemala and Belize earlier this year. The government will continue to help the Central American ally enhance the well-being of its people, he added.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei for voicing support for Taiwan’s international participation during the 78th U.N. General Assembly last month.

Following his remarks, Bucaro expressed appreciation on behalf of Giammattei to Tsai and the government for assisting Guatemala’s national development. Scholarships and training courses provided by Taiwan have strengthened the country’s talent pool, he said, additionally urging more local enterprises to invest in Guatemala and promote its products via Taipei City-based Central America Trade Office.

The aim of Bucaro’s visit is to attend events held by the E-learning Executive Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific and Latin American Studies at New Taipei City’s Tamkang University, expand diplomatic personnel exchanges and gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s culture, economy, technology and trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.
