Support from Czech Republic President Petr Pavel for cross-strait peace and stability is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 20.
During a speech Sept. 19 at the 78th U.N. General Assembly, Pavel said Czechia is an active and reliable ally and partner in the Asia-Pacific. Continued global cooperation remains key to all stakeholders in the region, he added.
According to Pavel, the Czech government deplores both China’s military action in the Taiwan Strait which raised tensions, as well as its unfriendly maneuvers against partners in the South China Sea. Any disputes or contentious issues must be solved peacefully, he said, adding that any potential armed conflict in the region would have negative consequences for the entire world.
In response, the MOFA expressed gratitude for global democracies that continue to support Taiwan and said that the country will deepen cooperation with like-minded partners such as the Czech Republic to counter threats imposed by China’s authoritarian expansion. The ministry added that the government is committed to safeguarding shared values upheld by the democratic world by maintaining equality, freedom and peace.
Pavel is among leaders who voiced support for Taiwan during the UNGA. In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “We thank #Belize PM @JohnBricenoBZE, #Guatemala President @DrGiammattei, #Paraguay President @SantiPenap, #Czechia President @prezidentpavel & #Palau President @Surangeljr for backing #Taiwan at #UNGA78. Support our @UN inclusion, strive for SDGs, secure global peace!”
