President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 19 that Taiwan is committed to deepening partnership with the U.S. state of Arizona and fostering more mutually beneficial development.
Tsai made the remarks while meeting with a delegation led by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Taiwan and Arizona have continued to strengthen their relations over the past seven years, Tsai said. Examples include the launch of the southwestern U.S. state’s trade and investment office in Taiwan in March and the establishment of Hsinchu City-headquartered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s new fabrication plants in Phoenix, the latter of which will help create more secure and resilient supply chains for both sides, she added.
Tsai noted that the group’s trip has been fruitful, with the members witnessing the signing of a cooperative memorandum of understanding between Taipei’s National Taiwan Science Education Center and Phoenix’s Arizona Science Center. They also took part in U.S. Business Day events, she said, adding that their visit demonstrates concrete support and regard for Taiwan.
In response, Hobbs said Taiwan and Arizona share a robust relationship rooted in technological development and common ideals. Such a close bond has been forged through long-term mutual support including academic, cultural, economic and national defense cooperation, she added.
Accumulated bilateral trade has totaled over US$3.274 billion, Hobbs said, adding that her administration is dedicated to fostering partnership with Taiwan and looks forward to additional collaborative opportunities that lie ahead.
