President Tsai welcomed a U.S. mission on cybersecurity business development Sept. 18 in Taipei City, expressing her commitment to further strengthening Taiwan’s cybersecurity and spurring innovative technology in partnership with the group.
Led by Laurie E. Locascio, director of the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, the delegation intends to introduce representatives from 13 U.S. firms to leaders of Taiwan’s information and communications technology sector as well as key industry suppliers, according to the Presidential Office.
During her remarks, Tsai said that during the Taiwan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation Dialogue in May this year, experts from the two sides reached a consensus on cooperation in several areas. The event, which the NIST also participated in, was the first high-level policy dialogue since the countries signed a technology cooperation agreement in 2020, she added.
In addition to technological collaboration, Taiwan and the U.S. are deepening partnership in economy and trade, Tsai said, citing the conclusion of the first agreement under the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade in June, marking a milestone in the bilateral economic partnership.
Tsai expressed hope that Taiwan and the U.S. would soon sign an agreement on double taxation avoidance to facilitate closer industry ties.
In response, Locascio said Taiwan is an important friend and trading partner of the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific, adding that the group’s corporate representatives are looking forward to discussing business tie-ups and exchanges with local counterparts.
According to the director, concerted efforts on cybersecurity, such as the Technology Trade and Investment Collaboration Framework inked by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua in 2021, will reinforce related bilateral links.
U.S. President Joe Biden’s National Cybersecurity Strategy released in March also places an emphasis on prioritizing cooperation with like-minded partners such as Taiwan, Locascio said, adding that she expects the visit will help Taiwan obtain strategies and tools to further bolster its cybersecurity.
