MOFA welcomes New Mexico governor

2023/09/20

The visit of a delegation from the U.S. state of New Mexico is welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 18.

During their six-day stay, members of the group led by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, attend a banquet hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee and hold discussions with high-level economic and trade officials and business representatives, the MOFA said.

The delegation members will also take part in U.S. Business Day, which takes place Sept. 19 in Taipei City and is jointly staged by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taiwan External Trade Development Council to expand bilateral cooperation in areas of green energy and technology, the ministry added.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and the southwestern U.S. state have a close economic and trade relationship as evidenced by a cooperative memorandum of understanding inked in 2021 and the establishment that same year of a New Mexican trade bureau office in Taipei. The current visit will further enhance the two parties’ cultural and educational exchanges as well as deepen the mutually beneficial partnership between Taiwan and the U.S., the ministry added.

Lujan Grisham’s trip follows the Sept. 16 visit of a delegation led by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, the MOFA said, adding that the group met with the president, the deputy foreign minister, economic and trade officials, and business representatives, in addition to witnessing the signing of a collaborative MOU between the Taipei-based National Taiwan Science Education Center and the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix before its return to the U.S. Sept. 20.
