Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu is leading a Taiwan delegation to St. Kitts and Nevis to celebrate 40 years of bilateral ties and the Caribbean ally’s 40th anniversary of independence, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 16.

Wu represents the government and people of Taiwan as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy, the MOFA said. His itinerary in St. Kitts and Nevis includes attending celebratory activities marking the ally’s September 19th Independence Day and signing a bilateral cooperation agreement on diplomatic training and exchanges, the ministry added.

During his stay, the minister will meet with St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew, Governor-General Marcella Liburd, Foreign Minister Denzil Douglas, Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley and other officials to exchanges views on issues of interest to both sides, the MOFA said, adding that he will also hold discussions on cooperative projects with St. Lucia Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre and St. Vincent and the Grenadines PM, Ralph Gonsalves.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis have expanded collaboration in areas spanning climate resilience, education, information and communications technology, medical care, sustainable development and women’s empowerment since establishing ties in 1983.

The Caribbean ally’s government is a staunch supporter of Taiwan’s international participation, the ministry said, adding that the National Assembly’s unanimous passage of a resolution backing Taiwan’s inclusion in global bodies including the International Civil Aviation Organization, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, World Health Organization, Interpol and the U.N. in April is deeply appreciated.
