MOFA announces US$1 million aid donation to Libya
2023/09/18
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 14 that it will donate US$1 million in aid to Libya following the devastating flood. The funds are offered for relocation of victims and reconstruction work in the northern African country.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the MOFA immediately instructed Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Jordon to contact the Libyan Embassy in Amman to convey condolences and offer assistance. As of Sept. 14, the number of recorded casualties and the death toll have been rising, with media reports of over 5,300 deaths and tens of thousands reported missing, the MOFA said.
Despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties or mutual representative offices, the MOFA offered humanitarian aid to the Libyan Government. The MOFA hopes that victims can start reconstruction and have their lives returned to normal as soon as possible.
The eastern part of Libya was affected by Storm Daniel Sept. 10, which brought heavy rainfall, resulting in the destruction of two dams, which then flooded Derna. Other regions of the country including the capital, Benghazi were also affected.
