The visit of a delegation from Michigan is welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept.11.
The group, led by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, attended a dinner banquet hosted by Deputy Minister Roy Chun Lee, the MOFA said. During the event, Lee said that Taiwan and the U.S. are like-minded partners who share common values of democracy and freedom.
Lee said that Taiwan and Michigan interact closely, citing as evidence a memorandum of understanding signed in May. The deputy minister added that the economic cooperation pact strengthens bilateral collaboration in high-tech fields such as artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and semiconductors.
The MOU is also intended to encourage industry and academia on both sides to forge a resilient supply chain, Lee said while expressing hopes that the signatories will continue to deepen exchanges in education, the economy and trade.
In response, Whitmer said that Michigan values its ties with Taiwan and she and her contingent of economic and trade officials look forward to gaining a more nuanced understanding of its economic power and capacity for innovation.
According to the MOFA, the delegation’s visit will facilitate mutual understanding between the governments and industries of both sides, allowing them to explore possibilities for further cooperation and expansion of the mutually beneficial relationship.
