VP Lai attends religious summit in Taipei
2023/09/11
Vice President Lai Ching-te said Sept. 7 that Taiwan is committed to working closely with religious leaders and democracies around the globe to promote world peace.
The vice president made the remarks during his opening address at the Taiwan International Religious Freedom Summit in Taipei City. Jointly organized by the Legislative Yuan along with other partner organizations, the event was attended by more than 150 participants from home and abroad, including members of the diplomatic corps in Taiwan and Sam Brownback and Katrina Lantos Swett, both co-chairs of Washington D.C.-based International Religious Freedom Summit.
According to Lai, Taiwan is now a vibrant democracy with a free and open society thanks to the bravery of its people and strong global support. This achievement is evidenced by Taiwan’s topping Asian rankings in the latest Democracy Index compiled by U.K.-based Economist Group, as well as its overall second place in Asia and full marks in religious freedom in the latest report issued by Freedom House, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization.
There will always be religious persecution as long as there is dictatorship, Lai said, citing discussions at the National Prayer Breakfast he attended in February 2020 in Washington. As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will spare no effort in protecting the rights of people of all faiths from all corners of the world, he added.
