The recent remarks by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida backing peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 8.
During her speech at the 18th East Asia Summit held Sept. 7 in Jakarta, Harris reaffirmed the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, the ministry said. While meeting with China’s Premier Li Qiang the same day on the sidelines of the summit, Albanese expressed concern over security issues involving Taiwan and the South China Sea, it added.
According to the MOFA, Kishida also pointed out the importance of regional peace and stability during the 26th summit between Japan and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held the previous day in Jakarta.
His stance echoes the joint statement issued Aug. 18 by leaders of the U.S., Japan and South Korea after their summit in the U.S. at Camp David that reiterated the importance of cross-strait peace and stability as an indispensable element of security and prosperity in the international community, the ministry added.
The MOFA said China’s escalating military threats and coercion against Taiwan have posed serious challenges to the region and caused concern in the global community. Due to the importance of its pivotal location in the west Pacific First Island Chain, Taiwan will continue to work with its like-minded partners to counteract authoritarian expansion, defend shared democratic values and ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region and around the world, it added.
