President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 4 that enhancing democratic resilience and maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific has become a common goal for Taiwan and the U.S.

The president made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Washington, DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies at the Presidential Office in Taipei.

Tsai said that the rules-based international order currently faces an unprecedented challenge due to the expansion of authoritarianism since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She expressed gratitude to CSIS for its long-standing concern over such issues, as well as cross-strait and Taiwan-specific matters and remarked that the group’s visit will enable a deeper understanding of the region’s current situation.

The president emphasized that economic security is national security and pointed to the passage of the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade First Agreement Implementation Act as evidence of the two countries’ deepening cooperation on that front.

In response, CSIS President and CEO John Hamre said that Taiwan has faced difficulties over the past five years with aplomb. The U.S. has always placed an emphasis on two-way benefits, and he looks forward to a continuing collaboration between the two sides, Hamre said.
