Team Taiwan shows strength at world tug of war championships

Team Taiwan claimed four gold and three silver medals at the Tug of War Outdoor World Championships organized by Netherlands-based Tug of War International Federation Sept. 2-3 in Sursee, Switzerland.
Women’s teams led the way to gold medals in the 500- and 540-kilogram weight classes, as well as the under-23 500-kg and the under-19 480-kg classes.
Men’s teams took second place in the under-19 560-kg division while two other silver medals were won in the under-23 560-kg and the under-19 520-kg mixed classes.
The Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education said it passed on congratulatory messages from President Tsai Ing-wen to the teams. Tsai lauded their outstanding performances and encouraged them to continue to strive for glory for themselves and the country.
According to the SA, the number of the people participating in sports is increasing and athletes in various fields are seeking for further competitive success. The administration will continue to support these sportspeople to achieve better results on the world stage, it added.
This year’s medal haul is slightly bigger than last year, when Taiwan athletes took home four golds, one silver and one bronze at the 2022 outdoor world championships that took place in the Netherlands.
According to the TWIF, around 1,000 competitors from 30 countries and territories took part in this year’s event and the next edition of the competition will be held in 2024 in Mannheim, Germany.
