President Tsai said Aug. 30 that Taiwan is committed to supporting the Marshall Islands in the international community, achieving new milestones in bilateral relations and jointly contributing to global development and prosperity.
Tsai made the remarks while accepting credentials from Anjanette Kattil, the Marshall Islands’ new ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan), at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Taiwan and the Marshall Islands are both maritime nations and it is important for the allies to increase exchanges on global warming, rising sea levels and other pressing issues, Tsai said. To this end, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu signed a Joint Statement on Combating Climate Change with four countries including the Marshall Islands last month, she added.
The two countries are continuing to deepen their partnerships in areas spanning agriculture, education and medicine, Tsai said. She also took the opportunity to thank the Pacific ally for speaking up for Taiwan’s global participation on the world stage.
In response, Kattil said Taiwan and the Marshall Islands have a special connection through roots from Austronesian heritage and this is further strengthened by the shared values of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law, peace, prosperity, good governance and ethical global citizenship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1998, the two sides’ friendship has constantly expanded through increased cooperation in commerce, trade, people-to-people exchanges and other fields, she added.
The Marshall Islands is appreciative of Taiwan’s staunch support and assistance to furthering social and economic development, Kattil said, adding that the country pledges to uphold Taiwan sovereignty and democratic values as well as its rightful place in the international community.
