Taiwan perseveres in request for inclusion in United Nations
2023/08/31
Prior to the 78th edition of the United Nations General Assembly, set to take place Sept. 5 at the U.N. headquarters in New York, the Taiwan government reiterated its request to be included in the organization’s system after having been excluded for over five decades, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 29.
The theme for this year’s U.N. GA is "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and the sustainability for all."
The MOFA said that the government continues to urge its diplomatic allies to voice support for Taiwan’s inclusion during the upcoming General Debate Sept.19-26. The country will also appeal to its allies’ permanent U.N. representatives to send a joint letter to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging resolution of the issue.
In addition, the MOFA said that the appeal to the U.N. is based on the fact that U.N. Resolution 2758 was misinterpreted by the organization, causing Taiwan’s exclusion and thus it should be clarified. Taiwan declares that it did not authorize the People's Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the U.N.
MOFA said that the U.N. should take active measures to uphold peace, stability and security in the Taiwan Strait and its neighboring regions. In addition, MOFA hopes for the country’s meaningful participation in all U.N. meetings, mechanisms and events, particularly those related to U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
In support of readmission to the global body, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu wrote an article published in international mainstream media, calling on the global community to condemn China’s irresponsible military provocation, which disrupts cross-strait stability.
A video entitled "To Equality” was also launched Aug. 28 to showcase how Taiwan tackles global issues and implements U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Sideline events will be held during the 78th assembly in support of rejoining the organization, the MOFA said.
