MOFA thanks global partners for supporting Taiwan, condemning PARLACEN...

2023/08/28

Staunch support from the international community for Taiwan’s decision to withdraw from the Central American Parliament based on PARLACEN’s adoption of a resolution to exclude Taiwan and include China is deeply appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Aug. 24.

The passage of the resolution severely undermined Taiwan’s sovereignty and its participation rights, the MOFA said, adding that it has caused irreparable damage to the perception of democracy in Central American countries.

According to the MOFA, more than 200 political figures from over 30 countries and territories publicly voiced their backing for Taiwan and expressed discontent over its deprivation of observer status through joint statements and social media posts. These included PARLACEN parliamentarians who voted against the resolution and government officials, foreign ministers, and lawmakers from Taiwan’s allies Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Paraguay, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Lucia, the ministry added.

Others who expressed similar sentiments include 16 U.S. senators and representatives; 132 lawmakers from South American countries; members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China; over 20 parliamentarians from EU member states; and Michael Gahler, chair of the European chapter of the Formosa Club, the MOFA said.

China’s brutal and unscrupulous methods of seizing Taiwan’s rights and interests in international organizations, as well as its attempts to suppress the country’s international engagement are denounced by democracies worldwide, the MOFA said, and have only strengthened Taiwan’s determination to expand its global presence.
