MOFA welcomes latest US military sale to Taiwan
2023/08/25
The government and people of Taiwan sincerely appreciate the United States’ State Department decision to approve an arms sale with an estimated value of approximately US$500 million, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 24.
Initiated at the behest of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., the deal includes F-16 Infrared Search and Track systems and related equipment. The arrangement reflects the U.S. policy of normalizing arms sales to Taiwan and underscores Washington’s commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, the MOFA said.
This marks the 11th weapon sale that U.S. President Joe Biden has authorized since taking office in 2021 and the third one this year, highlighting the importance the U.S. attaches to Taiwan’s security needs, the ministry said, adding that the requested materiel will help modernize the country’s armed forces and enhance its defense capability.
In the face of China’s provocations, Taiwan will persevere in strengthening martial power in order to defend its citizens’ lives, property and freedom, the MOFA said. It added that the government will continue to deepen the strategic partnership with the U.S. to safeguard rules-based international order and ensure peace, stability and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific.
