MOFA welcomes the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentary Association
2023/08/24
The visit by six members of the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentary Association is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 21.
Led by Mathias Tegner, vice president of the association, the group comprises cross-party parliamentarians Joar Forssell, Johan Hultberg, Asa Eriksson, Eva Lindh, and Stefan Olsson, the MOFA said.
This is the second formal Swedish parliamentarian delegation to visit Taiwan this year, evidencing the deep bond that the Swedish Parliament has with Taiwan.
During the seven-day visit, the group’s itinerary includes meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo, Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun and MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. Members will also visit the National Development Council, Ministry of Digital Affairs and Ministry of Health and Welfare, the MOFA said.
In recent years, Taiwan and Sweden have continued to deepen their bilateral partnership, with 23 Taiwan-friendly parliamentary questions and motions proposed by Swedish parliamentarians in 2022. Last year, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also voiced objection to China's military intimidation of Taiwan during his first parliamentary address, the ministry added.
Taiwan shares universal values of freedom and democracy with Sweden and will continue to cooperate with the like-minded partner to further strengthen democratic resilience.
