2023/08/24

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a banquet Aug. 21 in Taipei City for the U.S. think tank Atlantic Council delegation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Led by Dalia Grybauskaite, former president of Lithuania, the group includes Mark T. Esper, U.S. secretary of defense from 2019 through 2020; Choi Yoon-hee, former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the South Korean military; Matthew Kroenig, the council’s vice president and senior director of its Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security; Petr Tuma, a Czech diplomat; and other experts and academics.

Speaking at the event, Wu said that the visit demonstrated the support of transatlantic and Indo-Pacific democracies for Taiwan, which stands firmly on the front line against China’s escalating threats and authoritarian expansion. The minister added that the democratic world must unite to curb totalitarianism and safeguard regional peace and stability.

Wu took the opportunity to thank like-minded partners for emphasizing at numerous bilateral and multilateral events that the maintenance of the cross-strait status quo is key to global security and prosperity.

In response, Grybauskaite said countries across Europe are, like Taiwan, facing challenges imposed by authoritarian aggression. She stressed that democratic partners will stand together with Taiwan, whose people continue to show their commitment to self-defense.

The MOFA said the delegation members additionally exchanged views with Wu on the regional situation and relations between Taiwan and the U.S. as well as between Taiwan and European countries. They expressed their intentions to deepen cooperation across the board between Taiwan and transatlantic partners, the ministry added.
