The election of Cesar Bernardo Arevalo de Leon and Karin Larissa Herrera Aguilar as Guatemala’s president and vice president respectively is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Presidential Office said Aug. 21.
Miguel Li-jey Tsao, ambassador of the ROC (Taiwan) to the Central American ally, conveyed a congratulatory message to the winners on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te.
According to the PO, Arevalo of the Movimiento Semilla Party visited Taiwan in 1994 during his tenure as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, adding that he has a deep understanding of the two countries’ friendship.
As Taiwan’s indefatigable ally, Guatemala has long spoken out for the country in international arenas and firmly supports the country’s global participation, the PO said. It added that the government will conscientiously expand cooperation and exchange with the new administration on the basis of their shared values of freedom and democracy, while striving to enhance well-being for their nationals.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Taiwan is deeply impressed by the robust democratic process evident throughout Guatemala’s election cycle.
In a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account, the ministry said: “We sincerely applaud #Guatemala on its successful presidential election & congratulate @BArevalodeLeon & @KarinHerreraVP. #Taiwan looks forward to continuing cooperation with our democratic ally to benefit both our peoples. Viva Guatemala!”
