The visit by a 65-member group from Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party led by Japanese Diet member Norikazu Suzuki is welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 18.
In addition to Suzuki, who is director of the LDP's Youth Division, the group comprises seven other representatives from the Japanese Diet, members of the Youth Division and local representatives, according to the MOFA.
During their four-day stay, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President Lai Ching-te, Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih and Chairman of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Ko Wen-je. The delegates will also visit former President Lee Teng-hui's tomb at the Wuzhi Mountain Military Cemetery in New Taipei City, the MOFA added.
The Youth Division has long played a key role in interaction between Taiwan and Japan with members visiting regularly to exchange views on the bilateral relationship. The division also cultivates future Japanese leaders, including incumbent Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, as well as predecessors Shinzo Abe and Taro Aso.
After ending their Taiwan itinerary Aug. 23, the delegation will visit Palau on a four-day trilateral exchange trip, with DPP and TPP legislators Mark Ho and Chiu Chen-yuan, respectively, accompanying the delegates, the ministry said.
