VP Lai attends inauguration of Paraguay President Santiago Pena Palacios

Vice President Lai Ching-te attended the inauguration of Paraguay President Santiago Pena Palacios Aug. 15 in the South American ally, expressing high hopes for an auspicious future in the two-way ties going forward.
During the new president’s inauguration speech, Pena said Paraguay will build alliances and cooperation with a geostrategic vision and seek horizontal agreements. He added that Paraguay and Taiwan are not just allies but also like brothers.
According to the Presidential Office, Lai exchanged greetings with Miroslaw Adamczyk, the Holy See's ambassador to Argentina, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, among other dignitaries. He later attended a religious event presided over by Cardinal Adalberto Martinez Flores at the Asuncion Cathedral and a state banquet hosted by the new president and first lady.
Lai said in a post on his official Twitter account that it is an honor to attend the special event. He hopes that Paraguay achieves its national development goals under the new president’s leadership, and that the already robust bilateral relations will continue to thrive.
The day before, the VP took part in a social event with students from the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University. He said the government is committed to supporting the tertiary institution to cultivate personnel for Paraguay’s national development.
Lai also attended a dinner banquet for Taiwan expatriates and offered his gratitude for their promotion of Taiwan and their contributions to the two-way ties.
