Manga from Taiwan makes a splash in Osaka
2023/08/15
To promote manga from Taiwan in the international market, Taiwan Creative Content Agency launched pop-ups nostalgically styled after old-fashioned corner shops around Osaka Aug. 10.
According to TAICCA, one such exhibition area, called the Taiwan Manga Grocery Store, has been set up in Maji Treats’ Osaka branch in the Kintetsu Department Store. Japan’s biggest book dealer Tohan Corporation also established similar booths in bookstores around the city to increase local consumers’ access to creative works from Taiwan.
T-manga’s diverse themes and Japanese-inspired style make for easier commercial cooperation with Japanese publishers, TAICCA said. The agency has been advertising comics and other publications in Tokyo annually since 2020, with multiple T-manga titles’ Japanese-version copyrights successfully sold after last year’s campaign.
The relocation of this year’s promotional events to Osaka led to TAICCA’s first-ever cooperation with Tohan, opening sales channels for Japanese translations of varied T-manga titles in three Book1st locations around the city. TAICCA expressed hopes that the Taiwan Manga Grocery Store pop-ups would boost ties with Japan’s Kansai region and introduce more Japanese readers to the realm of T-manga.
