President Tsai Ing-wen received participants to the Ketagalan Forum at the Presidential Office Aug. 9 in Taipei City, reaffirming commitment to stand with like-minded partners defending shared values and contributing further to the international community.
This year’s forum topics spanned the Taiwan Strait status quo, global security order, the impact of gray-zone tactics on democracies and Taiwan’s role in global supply chain restructuring, Tsai said, adding that these challenges must be overcome through cooperation among democracies worldwide.
Standing on the frontline of democracy, Taiwan constantly faces cognitive warfare, cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, Tsai said. Over recent years, the country has continued to deepen cooperation with friends such as Australia, Canada, Japan, the EU and the U.S. to exchange experience on protection of the freedom of speech, she added.
According to Tsai, the government also looks forward to strengthening collaboration with the countries of those who attended, adding that Taiwan’s civil society will share knowledge in such areas with partners worldwide.
The president took the opportunity to thank international participants for publicly emphasizing that cross-strait peace and stability are indispensable to global security and prosperity. She also urged forum attendees to use their international influence to jointly uphold peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
In response, Estonia’s former Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, praised Taiwan’s competence in producing the world’s most advanced microchips. European countries have realized the importance of technological sovereignty following the Russia-Ukraine war, he said, adding that democracies like Taiwan and the EU member states must stick together ever more closely.
Taiwan and Estonia are partners that share values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, Ansip said. He pledged to make further contributions to deepen Taiwan-Estonia and Taiwan-EU relations.
