2023/08/02

The visit by a delegation of Japan lawmakers of the Japan Innovation Party is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs July 31.

Arriving Aug. 1, the 10-member group is led by Rep. Baba Nobuyuki, leader of the JIP, and comprises members of the House of Representatives Inoue Hidetaka and Nakatsuka Hiroshi, as well as members of the House of Councillors including Yanagase Hirofumi and Otokita Shun, among others.

During their three-day stay, the delegation will have an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, meet with Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun and with Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. The group will also pay respects at the tomb of late President Lee Teng-hui and tour Hualien County in eastern Taiwan.

According to the MOFA, the JIP donated 10 million yen (US$71,000) to Taiwan to assist in post-disaster reconstruction following the Hualien earthquake of 2018. The visit is Nobuyuki’s first trip to Taiwan after taking office as the JIP leader, demonstrating his staunch support for the country, the ministry added.

Taiwan and Japan are close partners that share the universal values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the MOFA said, adding that the visit shows the importance the JIP attaches to Taiwan and will help boost further exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
