2023/08/01
The arrival of a delegation from Somaliland July 30 is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Led by Mohamoud Hassan Saad, minister of trade and tourism, the group comprises officials from the ministry and the Berbera Economic Zone, located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, as well as representatives from international businesses based in Somaliland.
During their five-day stay, members of the delegation will meet with Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, attend a banquet hosted by Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui, and sign a memorandum of understanding on boosting bilateral commercial and trade relationships with Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua, the MOFA said.
While in Taipei City, the group will visit the Taiwan-Africa Business Association and the Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei, among others. They will also tour the Farglory Free Trade Zone in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City and the Kaohsiung branch of the MOEA’s Export Processing Zone Administration in the southern metropolis, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, the group’s visit follows a 2022 trip led by Foreign Minister Essa Kayd Mohamoud and is a development that reflects the growing relationship between the like-minded partners. Since Taiwan and Somaliland established mutual representative offices in 2020, the two countries have deepened cooperation in areas such as agriculture, education, energy and mining, and medical care, the ministry said.
The MOU will be the first Taiwan-Somaliland trade pact, paving the way for closer economic ties, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue to work with Somaliland to create a better investment environment for enterprises from both countries.
