Tsai receives EP Foreign Affairs Committee delegation
2023/07/28
President Tsai Ing-wen said July 26 that Taiwan aims to sign a bilateral investment agreement with the EU to strengthen their partnership and consolidate democratic unity.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving a 15-member delegation from the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group was led by its vice chair, Urmas Paet of Estonia.
Continuous support from the EP for cross-strait peace and stability as well as Taiwan’s international participation and a close bilateral collaboration is deeply appreciated, Tsai said. She added that exchanges are going from strength to strength, citing the trips by Vice President Nicola Beer to Taiwan last July and a group from the Committee on International Trade that December, as well as Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu's visit to the EP last month.
According to Tsai, Taiwan and the EU are partners that share the vales of freedom and democracy. In the face of authoritarian expansion and a global supply chain undergoing constant restructuring, the government will continue to deepen cooperation with the EU in areas such as cybersecurity, investment, logistics resilience and technological innovation, she added.
In response, Paet said Taiwan is a crucial trade partner for the EU. He added that its high-tech prowess and digital development will pave the way for further collaboration.
Taiwan boasts wide-ranging experience and expertise and its engagement in global bodies like World Health Organization would benefit the international community, Paet said. He added that the EU attaches great importance to the Asia-Pacific and regards security in all regions as key to the world’s peace.
