President Tsai Ing-wen said July 24 that Taiwan will continue to uphold shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law, adding that she believes an even brighter future for Taiwan-U.S. cooperation lies ahead.
Tsai made the remarks during a video address for the 124th National Convention of U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars from the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, the VFW’s long-standing support for Taiwan is deeply appreciated, as evidenced by a fraternal relationship established by the organization and Taiwan’s Veterans Affairs Council in 1980. The VFW expressed its support for Taiwan with an annual resolution calling for further bilateral defense and security cooperation, she added.
The exchanges between the two sides are going strength from strength, Tsai said, citing examples such as the VFW’s frequent visits to Taiwan, the Veterans Affairs Division set up by Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. last year, permanent staff dispatched by the VAC to Washington D.C. and communications established by the government with officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The president said backing for Taiwan from the current U.S. administration and society is also increasing, as demonstrated by its latest arms sales to Taiwan in June. High-ranking U.S. officials such as then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi paid a visit to Taiwan last August and the incumbent speaker Kevin McCarthy also arranged a meeting with Tsai during her U.S. transit in April, she added.
Tsai took the opportunity to express her gratitude to the veterans who fought and sacrificed their lives to preserve freedom and a democratic way of life.
