2023/07/27

Minister Kung Ming-hsin of the National Development Council visited the Czech Senate with a 28-member delegation July 25 at the invitation of that body’s president, Milos Vystrcil.

The minister’s contingent, composed of representatives from the government, major research institutions and universities, science and technology firms, and the finance industry, aims to bolster bilateral cooperation in the semiconductor industry, talent cultivation and other fields, the NDC said.

Since 2021, when Kung visited Central and Eastern Europe, the NDC has funded various projects through its US$200 million investment fund and US$1 billion financing fund and is always evaluating new proposals, the minister said. He also mentioned the recent opening of two branches of Taiwan banks as a path to more easily enable bilateral collaboration in financing to facilitate efforts in talent cultivation and the semiconductor industry.

Kung added that with the direct flights between Taipei and Prague launched this July, it was easy for his delegation to reach the Eastern European country, and invited Vystrcil to conduct a follow-up to his 2020 visit to Taiwan.

The day before the Senate visit, Kung met with Marketa Pekarova Adamova, speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, to exchange views on a wide range of topics. The minister also met with officials from government bodies covering research, trade, education, and other fields to discuss further cooperation, the NDC added.

The council emphasized that Taiwan and Czechia share a respect for democracy and freedom and both have a key role to play in the global supply chain.
