Han Kuang military exercise gets underway in Taiwan

2023/07/26

The 39th annual Han Kuang military exercise began July 24 in several locations around Taiwan, with the opening day testing the air forces’ ability to preserve combat capabilities to defend the country’s airspace.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, the annual exercise aims to incorporate lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war to strengthen the military’s readiness to coordinate defense in the event of a full-scale attack from China.

The drills feature some of the country’s most advanced weaponry including the F-16V, Mirage 2000 and Indigenous Defense Fighter jets; C-130 Hercules transport aircraft; CM-11 and M60A3 tanks; minelayers and various warships, the ministry said, adding that a computer-simulated war game was held May 14-19.

For the remaining four days, the exercise will involve live-fire battlefield scenarios including anti-airborne and anti-amphibious landing drills, as well as strategies to counteract cognitive warfare, cyberattacks and other gray zone tactics, it added.

Equally important, the MND said the exercise also involves the participation of civilian groups, fire squads, police and reservists to provide logistics support, carry out evacuation drills and protect the country’s key infrastructure such as airports, harbors and oil refineries.
