Taiwan brings home gold at International Biology Olympiad

2023/07/13

Team Taiwan won three gold medals and one silver at the 34th International Biology Olympiad in the United Arab Emirates, according to the Ministry of Education July 11.

The world’s largest annual biology contest for secondary school students involved 320 contestants from 80 countries and took place from July 3 to 10, the MOE said. Taiwan’s participants completed four rounds of competition and were selected for the national team after outperforming 3,500 of their peers, the ministry added.

Team Taiwan—led by biologist Chiang Yu-chung of National Sun Yat-sen University in the southern city of Kaohsiung—comprises Li Yen-wei and Wang Po-hsiang from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Kuo Chen-chang from Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School and Lin Hsuan-ming from National Tainan First Senior High School, according to the MOE.

Under the ministry’s incentive program for international mathematics or science olympiad participants, the gold medal winners will each be awarded NT$200,000 (US$6,582). They also automatically qualify for admission to the biology department of any university in Taiwan without needing to take an entrance examination.

According to the MOE’s K-12 Education Administration, the selection and training process for next year’s competition, set to be held in Kazakhstan, will continue as a way to broaden the horizons of promising students and bolster Taiwan’s exchanges with the world. Since first participating in the competition in 1999, Taiwan has garnered a total of 73 gold, 24 silver and 3 bronze medals.
