MOFA thanks Dutch Parliament for passing motions backing Taiwan

2023/07/12

Two motions passed July 6 by the Netherlands’ House of Representatives supporting Taiwan are sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The first motion, proposed by Member of Parliament Derk Jan Eppink, urges the Dutch government to deepen cybersecurity cooperation with Taiwan to capitalize on its rich knowledge in the field, the ministry said.

The second, jointly proposed by MPs Tom van der Lee and Kati Piri, calls on the Dutch government to take preventative measures to deter China from attempting to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, the MOFA said.

The passage of the two motions underscores the rock-solid support from the lower house of the Dutch Parliament following the passage of three pro-Taiwan motions in November 2021, two in November 2022 and another in April this year, the ministry added.

According to the MOFA, the two sides share the universal values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law. Bilateral cooperation will continue in areas spanning economy, energy, environment, epidemic prevention, innovation, science and technology, and trade, the ministry said, adding that as a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is committed to working with like-minded partners like the Netherlands to promote global peace, stability and prosperity.
