President Tsai Ing-wen said July 6 that cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. has produced remarkable results over the past seven years and stated her hope that the two countries’ friendship continue to grow.
The president made the remarks while attending a U.S. Independence Day event organized by the American Institute in Taiwan. Other high-profile attendees included Vice President Lai Ching-te, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and AIT Director Sandra Oudkirk.
The U.S. is Taiwan’s staunchest partner, and the supportive relationship began decades ago, Tsai said, adding that the North American country aided Taiwan’s pursuit of democracy and lent its assistance and encouragement at every critical juncture.
Tsai said the trade ties between the like-minded partners are going from strength to strength, as evidenced by the signing of the first agreement under the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade in June. Bilateral investment by enterprises from both sides is also increasing, she added, which contributes to building more reliable and secure global supply chains.
According to the president, support from the U.S. government and people is deeply appreciated. Taiwan’s democracy is crucial to regional peace and security, she said, adding that through a strong partnership, both countries can make not just the region better, but also the world.
