President Tsai receives cross-party Canadian delegation

President Tsai Ing-wen received a Canadian cross-party parliamentary delegation June 6 in Taipei City and looked forward to further collaboration for growth and prosperity.
Tsai said at this year’s G7 summit, Canada and other member countries issued a joint statement emphasizing that cross-strait peace is key to stability and prosperity in the international community. Canada’s new Indo-Pacific Strategy also looks to strengthen its partnership with Taiwan.
The president hoped that with an upcoming Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), the two countries will deepen economic and trade ties. As a key member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and as chair of its next annual meeting in 2024, Tsai also anticipated Canada’s continued support for Taiwan’s bid to enter the organization.
In response, Melissa Lantsman, deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and leader of the delegation, said that all the members are loyal Taiwan supporters who have backed Taiwan’s entry into various international organizations, including WHO, WHA and ICAO.
This is the second visit by a cross-party Canadian parliamentary group this year, following one in April by the Standing Committee of National Defense from the House of Commons, both embodying strong Canadian backing for Taiwan.
