President Tsai Ing-wen said July 5 that Taiwan is committed to working with Japan to contribute to regional development and prosperity while also stating her hope that friendly nations will voice support for Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
The president made the remarks while meeting with Keiji Furuya, chair of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council, and his delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Taiwan and Japan both value freedom and democracy, Tsai said, adding that the two countries’ special bond was exemplified during the pandemic by Taiwan’s donations of face masks, oxygen concentrators and oximeters, and Japan’s donation of 4.2 million vaccine doses.
Tsai took the opportunity to thank the Japanese government for stressing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability and standing in opposition to the unilateral change of the status quo in the region. The Diet’s backing for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations is deeply appreciated, she said.
The president added that she looks forward to boosting closer exchanges between the like-minded partners through diverse tourism activities. In response, Furuya said the council exchanged opinions with Taiwan’s Tourism Bureau earlier that day on ways to promote sightseeing in Japan’s Ishigaki and Yonaguni Islands.
According to Furuya, the council is working hard to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the East Asia. He added that it is also working with the Japanese government to implement measures in support of Taiwan’s engagement in the CPTPP as well as its observer status at the World Health Assembly.
