Taiwan to set up economic and cultural office in Mumbai
2023/07/07
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced July 5 that Taiwan will establish an economic and cultural office in Mumbai as part of ongoing strengthening of ties with India.
According to the MOFA, under the New Southbound Policy, cooperation between Taiwan and India has seen significant progress in a wide spectrum of areas spanning critical supply chains, culture, economy and trade, education, science and technology, and traditional medicine.
Since the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in Chennai was set up in 2012, nearly 60 percent of all Taiwan firms investing or operating in the South Asian country have chosen to expand their business to southern India, the ministry said.
The establishment of the TECC in Mumbai, the largest city in the world’s most populous country, is expected to have a similar effect in western India and create even more mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities for both sides, the MOFA added.
In addition, TECC in Mumbai will provide more extensive visa services, document authentication, emergency and other assistance to Indian nationals and Taiwanese residing or traveling in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh states and nearby regions.
A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP aims to enhance agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.
